During November 2022, with Bloomington Public Library amid a major expansion and renovation project, a time capsule was found buried in a wall since 1977. It was retrieved and opened. A video of the 1977 time capsule opening is available.
During August 2025, the library will observe the 1-year anniversary of the grand opening of its newly expanded and renovated building. In the tradition of those who preceded us, we are putting together a new time capsule, and you can help!
Our time capsule is limited to the following dimensions – 18.9” x 14.6” x 6.3”.
Not all suggested items will be included in the capsule.
Ideas will be collected through July 28, 2025, the final day of the Summer Reading Program.
On August 1, plan to join us at the library at 2pm for our Time Capsule Celebration. During the celebration, kids and families are invited to come to the library to make their own time capsules. (The library will provide the art supplies; families will provide the memorabilia). At 3pm, we will all parade upstairs to ceremoniously place the library's 2025 Time Capsule into a locked case in the Quiet Reading Room, where it will remain untouched until it's opened in 2050.
