Program Description

The Politics of Tea: The East India Company and British Tea Culture

Dear Readers,

As we celebrate the return of our beloved Bridgerton for a second season, I have come across a diverting bit of information. As you know, tea time is a staple in our dear London, but not many know of its history. The Bloomington Public Library is excited to host a virtual event where you can learn about the history of tea as it relates to England. Claire Evans, a former UK resident, will give a presentation on “The Politics of Tea,” and I encourage all you tender creatures to attend. Look below for a description of this most wondrous event!

Lady Whistledown

For all its genteel connotations, the history of tea is steeped in espionage, rebellion, and the rise of an empire. Join Anglophile Claire Evans to explore the most lucrative corporate venture the world has ever known and the product it brought to the West at any cost. With a nod to the popular “Bridgerton” series, learn how tea infused British society from top to bottom and what to expect should you ever find yourself at afternoon tea.
