Program Description

Banned Book Talk with PFLAG & the Prairie Pride Coalition

Did you know that in 2021, 1,597 books were challenged by censors across the country?

Join Bloomington Library, the Prairie Pride Coalition and PFLAG Bloomington/Normal for a discussion about Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe; Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic by Alison Bechdel; and the Gender Cool book bundle. Each of the titles selected is quick to read, and all have been targeted for removal or restriction in libraries and schools.

This event is an early kickoff to raise awareness of Banned Books Week, an annual, national event celebrating the freedom to read. Typically held during the last week of September, Banned Books Week highlights current and historical attempts to censor books in libraries and schools.

To register for the discussion, email pflagbn@gmail.com. PFLAG will send a link to the discussion to those who register.

Contact the Adult Services Desk at 309.590.6168 or reference@bloomingtonlibrary.org to check out or reserve a print copies of these books. Digital copies of these books -- eBooks or eAudiobooks -- may be available through the Libby or Hoopla apps. Limited copies may also be available courtesy of the Prairie Pride Coalition. To inquire, email info@ppc-il.org.
