1000 Books Before Kindergarten

Bloomington Public Library is now offering 1000 Books Before Kindergarten, a year-round and ongoing reading program for young children who’ve not yet entered kindergarten.

1000 Books Before Kindergarten is being offered because library staff recognize the importance of preparing children for kindergarten, and they know that one of the most reliable predictors of school achievement is being read to during early childhood. In addition, sharing books with children promotes a lifelong love of books and reading.

This fun, exciting, and free program will set young children on the path toward success and is simple to follow. Stop at the Children’s Desk to pick up your first reading log and to ask any questions you may have. Then, start reading. When you’ve completed your 1000th book, you’ll be given one of our coveted tote bags which state, “I Read 1000 Books Before Kindergarten with Bloomington Public Library.”

1000 books may seem like a lot, but if you read just one book each night, you’ll meet your goal in less than three years!
