MPAA Ratings
Some videos follow the same rating system as the films shown in the theaters. Ratings are displayed on the package of the video or DVD. Ratings are decided by the MPAA, or the Motion Picture Association of America. Libraries do not have any control over the ratings of films. Ratings don’t indicate if a film is “good” or “bad.” The criteria considered by the MPAA when rating a film includes theme, violence, language, nudity, sensuality, drug abuse, and other adult oriented topics.
Here is the rating system used by the MPAA for movies:
- G General Audiences
all ages are admitted. - PG Parental Guidance Suggested
Some material may not be suitable for children. - PG-13 Parents Strongly Cautioned
Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13. - R Restricted
When shown in theaters those under 17 require parent or adult guardian for admission. - NC-17
When shown in theaters no one 17 & under is admitted.
