We offer a variety of materials of special interest to parents. Read below to learn more about some of these collections.
Are you looking for particular information on child development, health, safety, education, and/or emotional needs of your child?
The Parent Collection contains fiction and nonfiction books plus audiovisual materials of interest to parents and caregivers. While some of the materials are directly for parent use, others are for parent and child to use together. This collection is located in the Children's Services Department on the opposite side of the Juvenile Magazine shelving and before the Juvenile Biography section begins.
Kits check out for one week and are located in the Mixed Media section of the Children's Services Department. Below are a few kits in this collection.
Hooked on Phonics/Hooked on MathHelping your child learn to read and understand math is fun with Hooked on Phonics and Hooked on Math. The kits contain learning DVDs, games, books, and a parent guide to help navigate the learning process.
Itty Bitty KitsThe Itty Bitty Kits are geared for infant to toddler and include pre-reading activities for a parent and child to do together. There are a variety of kits that include board books and educational toys. Each kit provides parents with a checklist of items with general guidelines.
Reading Rainbow BackpacksCheck out a kit featuring one of the books from the PBS series Reading Rainbow. A DVD, an activity book, and a learning activity are included with the book.
Playaway is an audio format, combining recorded books with an easy-to-use player all in one small unit. When you check out a Playaway, all you have to do is press play to start listening immediately-there is no need for a separate player. Just insert your own headphones.
Want to communicate with your baby in a new way? Baby Signing is a technique of utilizing signing to enrich baby's language skills before your child develops verbal speech. Several different materials are offered, including DVDs, board books, fiction and nonfiction books, kits, and CDs.
